Due to the high cost of gold plating of connectors overall, many company’s are considering the options of Selective Electroplating. At present companies having these capabilities are limited to captive operations and a few jobs plating (very few) companies.

Gold cost savings: 45% to 85%+.

Some of the processes presently being used are listed below:

1.   Most commonly used: Vibratory or barrel plating over-all using Sulfamate Nickel, followed by a gold strike and heavy gold electroplate.

2.  Limited use of selective Gold plating using the following procedure: Vibratory or barrel plating over-all using Sulfamate Nickel, followed by a gold strike. Parts are then transferred to an automatic or manually loaded selective Plating equipment tooled for pin or socket type connectors.

3.  Being evaluated with some approved applications. Vibratory or Barrel plating over all using a MATT Nickel Sulfamate followed directly with Select gold strike and heavy gold plating.

4.  Being considered due to the high cost of gold. Overall Nickel Sulfamate followed by Palladium electroplating, followed by a gold strike in selected areas.
